A solid solution between calcite, otavite and smithsonite. It is synthesized by creating aqueous solutions that were supersaturated with respect to calcite, otavite and smithsonite. Specifically, CdCl2 and ZnCl2 concentrations were 0.02 mol/L. The solution also had 0.1 mol/L CaCl2 with equimolar of carbonate. The initial pH was adjusted to 11 using NaOH. The solutions were equilibrated for 6 days with gentle agitation at 25 ºC. The solids were obtained via filtering with a 0.22 μm PVDF membrane (Durapore®). After rinsing with DI water and ethanol, the solids were dried at 60 ºC.
